I always like to start the day with lemon water, because it’s so helpful for the liver and it tastes great.  In the summer, though, I’ll drink it all day long.

There are a lot of variations on this, so you can play around with it.  Here’s my basic “recipe”.

– 3 – 4 thin slices of lemon*
– 1 – 2 small chunks of peeled grapefruit
– 1 sprig of fresh mint, or fresh basil

Toss everything in a glass pitcher and fill with filtered water.  Let it sit for a couple of hours to infuse the water with the citrus/mint flavor.   You can use this to flavor your water or drink it as is.

This can stay in the refrigerator for a couple of days; just keep adding fresh water.  Don’t be surprised if the mint or basil blackens a bit – it’s perfectly safe to drink.  Just change out all the ingredients every 48 to 72 hours.

Use any combination of citrus that appeals to you.  I’ve thrown in other fruits as well: cherries look beautiful and very festive.

*Organic lemons are best for this recipe.
